Treasure hunters

Lepta is about changing the lives of the people who live in Mathare. Mathare is one of the worst slums areas in Kenya. It is home to just under one million people living in great hardship. Drug addicts, wives and children who have been abused by their own husbands and fathers, high levels of immorality resulting in unwanted pregnancies and high HIV AIDS infection rates, families living on the brink of poverty, children sleeping hungry more often than not, school dropouts, hundreds of gun toting teenage criminals are the norm in Mathare. Yet we are convinced that Mathare is also one of the greatest treasure fields in the earth. Under the many layers of years of being looked down upon, mistreatment, hopelessness and emotional, physical and sexual abuse, lies a great treasure hidden within the lives of the people of Mathare. Lepta is about finding that treasure. We know that Mathare can rise out of the despair, despondency and darkness it has fallen into. We know that Mathare can realize her full potential and rise up as a light to other communities. We know that children in Mathare do not have to sleep hungry or lose their parents to HIV AIDS when they are still young, families can become complete and a place of safety, the gifts, creativity, ideas, and skills of people in Mathare can be tapped and utilized to impact the world. We know that out of Mathare Life can flow. We know this and we are committed to bringing this to pass. We are treasure hunters focused on digging as deep as we must and for as long as is necessary until we bring forth the treasure that is Mathare.

True treasure hunters are those who do not despair quickly. They have the patience to dig through all the dirt and rocks. They do not judge by external appearances but look at the heart and have the ability to bring out the best from even the worst. True treasure hunters are ready to forgo temporary pleasures to acquire that which is more valuable. Are you a treasure hunter? Be it at your work place, school, home, amongst your friends, what are you digging for? The dirt or the gold. Have you let the dirt and the rocks stop you?
