Lepta - The philosophy

More than anything else Lepta is a philosophy, a way of doing things, a different manner of living. Lepta is about giving our all no matter how little or feeble it might seem. There is a story told of an old woman who had only two "lepta" coins (the lowest denomination coin in the then Roman empire). People were giving their offerings and many came with a lot of money and gave. This old woman only had two “lepta’s” to her and when her turn to give came she put in all. She did not hold back because what she had was insignificant compared to the rest, she did not hold back because men would not notice such a small amount, she did not even hold back because what she was giving would not make much of a difference anyway. She gave her all. And the most amazing thing happened. The single most important person in the whole universe, The Creator of the universe, the One who knows all, looked at this poor old woman and said to those who were with Him, "this woman has given more than all the rest." This is what Lepta is about. We are focused on giving our all in Mathare and in every area of life and we teach even the most despised that they too can have impact in life if they just give their all. The old lady in the story could not have given the little she had if there was no offering box. At Lepta we are determined to create opportunities so that even the lowliest can get a chance to give the gift they carry in their hearts and minds and we assist them expand their boundaries.
